Its manufacturing process begins with tanning and drying the hides. The cowhide used for the floor is then coated with tar for added durability and protection. The upper part is usually made from goat or ram hides and sewn with strong cotton threads by skilled craftsmen known locally as "Nuqaltiyya" or "Iskafiyya," who are widespread throughout Sudan.

Several regions are renowned for their sandal-making, but Darfur holds a special place. The sandals of El Fasher are considered among the finest, while those of El Geneina are distinguished by their light weight and high quality.
